WELCOME TO SANE!

THANK YOU for visiting SANE. We are an all-volunteer, registered charity
dedicated to the survival of the Serbian people and culture.

OUR MEMBERS are Serbian-Americans, other former Yugoslavs concerned about the human rights and homeland they share with Serbians, and
Americans of different backgrounds concerned about the Balkans crisis 
and the U.S. role in it.

WE ARE HORRIFIED that the terrorism which helped destroy Yugoslavia 
has reached America, and that the intimate connection between the two

BUT WE CONTINUE to strive to help those who were the "canary in the 
mine." As a result of the Balkans wars, nearly one million people, the 
largest refugee population in Europe today, continue to live displaced in 
Serbia and Montenegro.  Half of these refugees have been without homes since 1995 (or earlier) when they were expelled en masse from the Krajina region of Croatia and from Bosnia. The other half are newer victims: Serbs, Roma (Gypsies), Gorani and Albanians who have fled from Al Qaeda-connected Albanian terrorism in Kosovo.

DESPITE THE NEW LIGHT on misunderstandings of "international opinion," the people of Serbia continue to suffer from unrepaired damage -- to 
hospitals, utilities, the environment, the economy and society -- of the 1999 NATO bombings.

WE DO NOT FORGET that very few Serbs remain in Croatia.  They are mostly the elderly, and they are frightened and oppressed.  By expelling, killing and discriminating against Serbs, Croatia has, in the words of its former president Tudjman, "taken care of its centuries-old problem."

IN BOSNIA, the Serb entity of Republika Srpska struggles with a poor economy and the burdens of war trauma: displaced people and refugees, and numerous war invalids and orphans.  Republika Srpska still receives only a small portion of international aid; the bulk goes to the Muslim-Croat entity.

IN KOSOVO, Serbia's ancient cradle, world treasures of medieval and religious art are being destroyed. More than one hundred monasteries and
churches have been leveled to the ground.  Serbs and other minorities live
trapped in ghettos, or are simply murdered, under the supposed protection of a NATO "peacekeeping" effort which continues to cost U.S. taxpayers 
hundreds of millions of dollars.

WHAT HAVE WE ALL LOST?  In 1990 all of these lands were part of the most ethnically diverse nation in Europe: Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia had the highest standards of living and freedom among all eastern European countries. The Serbians were key allies of the United States during the past century: World War I, World War II and throughout the "Cold War."  Today, Yugoslavia is a land destroyed by its own allies.

YOU WHO CARE will be glad to know that throughout this nightmare Serbian-Americans have not forgotten their natural hospitality. There 
are many local events through which you can experience the marvel of 
Serbian friendship, food, music, dance, art -- and diversity. As a "plain 
American" I can attest to the fact that all are welcome. Go to the CULTURE area of our site for more information about area events and Serbian culture.
