War
in the Balkans: ‘Collateral damage’ lies dying in a shattered Belgrade
hospital
By
Robert Fisk, © The Independent, 14 April 1999
Robert
Fisk’s article vividly describes the consequences of a NATO attack on Banjica,
a suburb of Belgrade, on April 13, 1999. Fisk writes about a hospital that
has been damaged as a result of its proximity to the targeted sites, and
about the patients which have been hurt by the shards of glass from the
blasted windows. Fisk uses this sad occurrence to discuss the NATO statement
that "the alliance goes to ‘extraordinary lengths’ to avoid civilian casualties,"
concluding that the ‘extraordinary lengths’ are not long enough.

Milena's
story
By
Robert Fisk, © The Independent, 25 November 1999
Robert
Fisk describes his return to a small Serbian town of Surdulica, where last
May NATO bombed a hospital housing a number of Serbian refugees from Croatia.
This is a story of one of the victims, a young woman called Milena who
was killed during the attack. She left a diary behind her, describing her
great love for a local radio DJ, Dejan. Robert Fisk investigates the circumstances
of her death and whether it could have been prevented. He suggests that
the refugees previously living in an old school had been moved to the hospital
to shield the soldiers that lived on the floor below.

NATO
rejects cease-fire, resumes bombing Yugoslavia
©
CNN, 6 April 1999
The
article covers the reactions of Western politicians and military figures
to Milosevic’s proposal of an open-ended cease fire during Orthodox Easter.
It also recapitulates the "progress" made during the previous night of
bombing. Hit targets included Pancevo, Surcin, Lucani, Podgorica, Novi
Sad oil refinery and its only remaining bridge over Danube. An entire paragraph
is dedicated to the town of Aleksinac where NATO bombs hit a civillian
apartment complex as well as a medical clinic.
